A Humanities Professor Walked Into the AI Era.
Writers and scholars around me are terrified. Rightfully so. The tools that once separated trained thinkers from the crowd are being replicated — or at least, that's how it looks from the outside.
But I have always been a skeptic. When people around me reach general agreement, I am usually the critic. And what I've seen — as a professor, as a publisher, and as someone who spent time on the industry side training the very LLMs people now fear — is this: AI is not going to replace any of us unless we allow it to.
I did ethnographic work as a superrater training LLMs in 2023 and 2024. I teach a seminar called "AI and the Making of Metaphysics." I have edited manuscripts, built publishing workflows, and founded two companies. I built most of the tools we now sell because I needed them — and because the versions available on the market are being built by people who have never sat with a manuscript that wasn't working or designed a course curriculum from scratch.
